Eastern Cicada Killer Wasp
Cicada Hawk/Cicada Wasp
The trick to keeping these wasps out is generally ensuring there is no area for them to nest. Cicada Killers dig burrow holes in the ground in areas where grass or other ground cover is sparse.
The Cicada Killer is approximately two inches long, mostly black with yellow stripes. While these wasps are generally non-aggressive, they have been known to sting. Throughout my landscaping experience I have been stung once, and it packs a punch. While not a welcome addition to your yard; the Cicada Killer is beneficial to local ecology as they keep locust populations in check.
Deterrent Tips
- Thickening your grass via over-seeding
- Flooding ground ground nests with a garden hose regularly
- Thick layers of mulch on grassless terrain
